English Language Classics

The goals of the class are:

• to expose students to great writing from different times and places so they can see how humans and societies are similar and different,

• to think critically about what we read and what constitutes great writing,

• to explore ideas that are raised in literature and relate them to our own experience, 

• to understand and empathize with people who are different from ourselves,

• to learn the different techniques by which authors express their ideas,

• to express our own ideas precisely and vividly, both orally and in writing,

• to learn, practice and improve different types of writing, and

• to have fun reading and discussing literature.

 

Tentative curriculum includes:

• 1984 by George Orwell

• Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

• The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

• Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

• To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee 

• Fences by August Wilson 

 

Classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 3rd through December 19th (fall semester), and from January 7th through May 23rd (spring semester), with two week vacations at Thanksgiving, Christmas and the last two weeks of March for Ramadan.  One section will meet 11:30 am - 12:30 pm Eastern (8:30 - 9:30 am Pacific), and the other will meet 1:15 - 2:15 pm Eastern (4:15 - 5:15 Pacific).
